january 7th. three years ago today, in 2015, “déjà-boo” was released. originally meant to be a pre-release single leading up to the official release of jonghyun’s debut solo album, base, the song unexpectedly took south korea by storm both digitally and on music shows, leading sm entertainment to make it an official second leading single alongside his original debut title, “crazy (guilty pleasure)”. not only was this was a first for the company, but it also marked the first time that an artist under their roster had two promotional title tracks. this was also a prolific moment as the song was both composed and written by jonghyun, unlike “crazy (guilty pleasure)”, which he had just penned the lyrics to. the song was co-composed and featured zion.t, a close and personal friend of jonghyun.
upon it’s digital release, “déjà-boo” debuted at #1 on the melon digital chart and proceeded to remain in the spot for over a day after release, hitting the realtime roof at one point. it also took the first place spot on all other digital charts (with the exception of cyworld, which sm did not distribute music to), giving it an unofficial all-kill. the song proceeded to remain in the top twenty on melon into it’s fourth week of release and remained on the chart overall for up to three months in total. on gaon, it debuted at #1 on the weekly digital chart, a first for an sm soloist, and at #3 on the monthly digital chart for the month of january 2015. though it sadly did not end up making the year end digital chart it ranked #64 on the half year chart. on top of this, “déjà-boo” also brought in eight music show wins for jonghyun, the first being presented to him by minho on music core on january 17th, 2015.
in celebration of this incredible release korean shawols have began the hashtag, #데자부3주년, which took the first place on the all cities korea realtime trending chart as soon as the day turned over into january 7th.
